So You Want to Have a Baby?
Starting a family is an incredible experience - perhaps even more than usual if you are a lesbian. Maybe you have always wanted to have children. Maybe you have just decided that parenthood is for you. Maybe you are still not sure if you are ready to be a mommy, or a daddy. Deciding to start a family may be the most difficult decision you will ever make. After all, these are brand new people you are taking about! The choices you make now will impact you, and at least one other person, forever.
The best place to start is by gathering information. Getting pregnant can be complicated, and expensive, if you don't have unlimited access to fresh sperm. And since I am assuming you are a lesbian, I am also assuming you do not come across a lot of sperm in your every day life. The information below will focus on getting the goods and getting the goods where they need to go, plus provide you with some resources which will help you along the process.
You may decide that adoption or surrogacy is the best option for starting your family. However, this guide focuses more on lesbians who choose alternative insemination as a way to start their family. Along the way, I will share my own personal experiences along the way to mommy-ville. I have two gorgeous sons conceived by alternative insemination and I learned a lot between the time I first picked up a donor sperm catalog and the time I changed my first diaper. I hope you find this helpful in your own journey!
